Overview
Somewhat difficult to describe this Lentek, especially to someone who does not want one or even knows that one is desirable. Indeed part of the description needs to focus on the device that precedes it, the pick up cartridge. Moving Coil head amplifiers owe their existence to the equally exotic low output moving coil transducers otherwise known as MC cartridges or pick ups.
In the same way moving coil (MC) cartridges are superior to moving magnet/iron types, then the lower output MC versions are superior to the higher output MC versions. The superiority is in the form of greater tracking ability, better micro and macro dynamics and a wider frequency response band. Why, well the moving bits, stylus, cantilever, armature and coils are lighter in moving coils and more so in the low output versions. Lighter moving parts are easier to articulate and by definition produce a more precise signal.
We have extolled the virtues of SUTs (step up transformers) in other products we currently are offering. However, as is usual with this interest and passion, there are always alternate views. Head amplifiers do have a number of advantages over SUTs and really the only way to arrive at any sensible conclusion is to try it with your cartridge!
This Lentek head amplifier is powered by a 9 volt dry cell battery that is good for around 300hours of operation. The front panel “on-off” switch also offers a third position to test the battery via a led. Battery power offers the convienience of no mains cable, aside from reducing visual clutter, the main benefit is the absence of mains induced noise into the tiny cartridge signals. Connections are via gold plated RCAs and flyleads.
